Saint Nilo’s medallion

Saint Nilo’s medallion

Description

In a recent study the historian of art Giorgio Leone ( AAVV. , Saint Nilo di Rossano e l’abbazia greca di Grottaferrata, Roma 2009, p. 224), claims that the sculpture is the work of a Neapolitan silversmith of the XVIII c. and that it belonged to the frontal of the high altar of the Cathedral .
The existence of the frontal of the altar of Achiropita is attested in the documents of the diocesan Archives of Rossano. The frontal had three little relief sculptures: Saint Nilo together with Saint Bartholomew and Our Lady of Achiropita (“ Study of Achiropita").
