 Ring of Saint Nilo, Sculptures

Description

The bronze ring with collet in vitreous paste is known as Saint Nilo’s ring, even if the saint from Rossano lived between the X and the XI c., while the jewel can be dated back to the XIII c. The ring comes from the monastery of Saint Mary of the Patir .Probably, it belonged to an abbot of the Patir of the XIIIc. and whose name was Nilo or Nifo, who may have used the ring as a seal , as the Latin abbots did. On the vitreous paste the image of the Byzanthine Virgin Odigitria is portrayed with the Greek inscription “MR”, that is Mother.
