Saint Nilo receives the blessing from the Crucifix

Saint Nilo receives the blessing from the Crucifix

Description

The painting was made by Michele Capobianco, painter from Vitulano , in 1904.
The work is related to the pictorial cycle of 1610. It was Cardinal Odoardo Farnese
who wanted the cycle frescoed by Domenichino in Grottaferrata.
The scene is inspired to “Bios” of Saint Nilo, drawn up by his pupil Saint Bartholomew.
In this scene it is said that , after he asked the Crucified, to save him from a temptation, the Cross with Jesus still alive appeared to Saint Nilo. When the saint said:” Have Mercy on me , my God, and bless your servant”, the Lord, with his right hand made the sign of the cross on him three times ; suddenly the divine vision disappeared and, along with it, also the temptation and the affliction of the Saint
