Achiropita’s cloak

Achiropita’s cloak

Description

The work was placed in front of the image of Achiropita, kept in the Cathedral , around the 40’s of the XVII c., in compliance with the wish of Archbishop Pietro Spinelli . The cloak, in wrought and engraved silver , has an iconography glorifying the sacred image: on the sides there are two praying angels, while on top , other two angels hold an imperial crown among a triumph of putti ; the opening , which allowed a vision of the icon below, is encircled by a series of precious ornamental stones of various colours and shapes. According to G. Leone, historian of art, the cloak can be attributed to Orazio Scoppa, a Neapolitan silversmith, while the crown, substituted in the XIX c. , to silversmith Luigi Abbate.
