Diocesan Museum

The Museum

The diocesan museum was established in 1952 by archbishop Giovanni Rizzo. In the space of two rooms, properly created by restoring the premises of the sacristy of the cathedral, artistic proofs,  sacred and liturgical furnishings were collected  along with other documentary material of different ages, including the very famous and precious holy text of  the Codex Purpureus. In 1977 the museum underwent an important structural intervention, thanks to Archbishop Antonio Cantisani. In 1985-1986 Archbishop Serafino Sprovieri started the restoring of a wing of the Archbishop which had to become a museum.

After years of work, on December 9th 2000, the new seat of the museum  was opened  by Archbishop Andrea Cassone. The present collocation, in the rooms behind the cathedral is made up of  ten rooms, one of which is appropriately  reserved  to the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis.

Archbishop Santo Marcianò, together with  the Monuments and Fine arts/ Ethnoanthropologic goods Office of Calabria has urged and started a reorganization of the exhibition rooms, according to  scientific museum and modern criteria aiming at exploiting adequately the structural rooms and at promoting the contents
