Story of the church

The church, dedicated to the cult of Saint Mary of the Assumption, is divided into three naves. Inside there is a font with the coat of arms of the Sambiase family. Very probably it was given as a gift to the church by Giuseppe Ruggero and Vittoria Mandatoriccio , on the christening of their first born Bartolo Sambiase, born in Calopezzati on 6th July 1673. On the right nave there is a painting representing Our Lady of the Rosary with Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine, surrounded by fifteen medallions with the mysteries of the rosary. The author is dubious.
Some critics attribute it to Spagnoletto, others to Francis de’ Muro.
According to Frangipane the author is Francis Solimena.
