Story of the church

The Church is dedicated to Saint John Calibita, the Roman monk , whose remains rest on the Tiber Island in Rome . Around the VIII century, a group of Calibiti monks , followers of the Saint, arrived from Costantinople at Caloveto. They were escaping from the iconoclastic persecutions wanted by Emperor Leo III with the edict of 726. They dug some caves which served as monastery.
The present structure should date back to the XIV c. Even if on the rose window and on the top of the pillar of the Baptismal font there is the date 1542, that year very probably refers to the first restoring of the structure rather than to the year in which it was built. . Further modifications were made in the church during the second half of the XVII century.
